Dr. James Drake

Dr. Drake is a pediatric neurosurgeon who has been on staff at the Hospital for Sick Children since 1988. He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Surgery and succeeded Dr. Robin Humphreys as the Divisions fifth Neurosurgeon-in-chief in 2003. During his time as Dr. Drake served as Co-Chairman of Interprofessional Practice Committee (The Hospital for Sick Children), since 2006.

Dr. Drake attended Princeton University from 1969 to 1974, receiving a degree in aerospace and mechanical engineering. He then received his medical education at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, graduating in 1979. In 1982, Dr. Drake entered the Neurosurgery Training Program at the University of Toronto. He received his Master’s degree in magnetic resonance imaging of hydrocephalus in 1987 at the University of Toronto. In the same year, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. After a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at l’Hộpital Necker-Enfants Malades in Paris, Dr Drake joined the neurosurgical staff at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1988. Read more...

Dr. Larry Roy

Dr. W. Lawrence Roy is a pediatric anesthesiologist who has been on staff at the Hospital for Sick Children since 1980. After eleven years as Chief of the Department of Anesthesia (The Hospital for Sick Children) Dr. Roy has relinquished this position. During his time as Anesthesiologist-in-Chief, Dr. Roy served as Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee (The Hospital for Sick Children). Dr. Roy was a member of the Board of Trustees (The Hospital for Sick Children) 2002 - 2006. Over the years Dr. Roy has provided care and support for many of the Herbie patients and their families. His major clinical initiatives include: development of offsite anesthesia for children; expansion of anesthetic services for procedural pain. Dr. Roy sponsored the development of the Divisional Centre of Pain Management and Pain Research and continues to champion the development of the Centre of Excellence for Pain Management and Research at SickKids. Congratulations to Dr. Roy and we look forward to seeing him at this year’s Mistletoe Ball!

Dr Tony Khoury

Tony Khoury is Head of The Division of Urology, Professor, Department of Surgery at The University of Toronto and an Associate Scientist at the Research Institute HSC. He completed his residency training at The University of Toronto from 1981-85 and his fellowship training in Pediatric Urology at HSC from 1985-87. Following that he spent a basic science research year at The University of Calgary in Bill Costerton’s Infection/ Biomaterial research lab. During that year Khoury and Costerton were awarded a patent on the bioelectric mechanism to eliminate bacterial biofilms.

He joined the Division of Urology in 1988 and was appointed Division Head in 1995. His special interests are in reconstructive surgery of the genitourinary tract, urological malignancies and renal transplantation. He has maintained an active laboratory research effort and has established extensive collaborations within The University of Toronto, nationally and internationally in the fields of infection, biomaterials and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Khoury’s CV includes 273 publications, 23 book chapters, 208 presentations at national and international meetings, and 64 visiting professorships/invited lectures. He is chair or member of several hospital, university and national/international specialty committees.

He is married to Shahira Khoury MD (Specialist in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation). They have three children Michael, Eric, and Dina .

Dr Jacob Langer

Jacob C. Langer, MD

Dr. Langer has been recognized by Operation Herbie for his long-term contribution and support of international patients; his leadership in overseeing the treatment of the conjoined twins and his commitment to international humanitarian work.

Dr. Jacob C. Langer was educated and trained at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  He did research fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco, and the McMaster University Intestinal Disease Research Program, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health, the Medical Research Council of Canada and the McLaughlin Foundation.

Dr. Langer was Assistant Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at McMaster University and a pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital at Chedoke-McMaster from 1989 to 1992.  He then moved to St. Louis and became Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Washington University and a pediatric surgeon at St. Louis Children’s Hospital from 1992 to 1999.  He came back to Canada in 1999 to become Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, and Chief of the Division of General Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children, where he is the inaugural holder of the Robert M. Filler Chair in Pediatric Surgery.   He has a keen interest in international surgery, and has taught and lectured around the world on a variety of topics in pediatric surgery.  In 1995, Dr. Langer won the prestigious Innovative Scientist of the Year award from the St. Louis Academy of Science, and he has recently been awarded the 2007 James IV traveling fellowship.

Robert M. Filler, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C)

Dr. Filler, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and graduated cum laude in 1956 from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He has since distinguished himself by his reputation as an outstanding pediatric surgeon, first at Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital in Boston and The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He served an unprecedented 18 year term as the Surgeon-in-Chief at Tthe Hospital for Sick Children. He is now Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Emeritus at the University of Toronto.

The Hospital for Sick Children has a tradition of over 125 years of caring for children from all over the world. Last year, their doctors and nurses treated children from 41 countries from outside North America.

Herbie Fund is able to offer a single point of contact, through the Hospital for Sick Children International Patient Office, for all families seeking to arrange treatment for their child.

International Patient Program: This program, led by Kamla Sharma, supports the unique needs of international patients and facilitates their life altering treatment at SickKids. This dynamic team includes Cindy Fiore, Marissa Lagman, Susan McFarlane, Kenneth Maharaj, and Cathy Shapiro.
